Grout is a cement or mortar based filling substance that is place in the crevices that are made when you tile is initially placed on your surface. Grout is porous and thus using this type of filler, dirt, dust and stains can accumulate in these lines which will need daily routine cleaning and yearly professional cleaning to keep its clean and bright appearance
Cleaning Grout starts with routine daily cleaning of any spills as soon as they happen. Keeping floor grout lines clean by daily sweeping or vacuuming and mopping with hot ph balanced soapy water, then thoroughly letting it dry. Also for floors, having a good rubber backed rug at all entry ways will go along way to trapping the dirt or sand that foot traffic ultimately bring in from being ground into the grout on the floor.
Even with the best care and cleaning the homeowner does to keep grout lines clean and unstained; eventually it will break down over time. That is when Grout Repair will be needed. When grout begins to crack and break down or become stained repairing it is not a difficult process. This can also be an inexpensive process, however replacing grout can be a time consuming and a bit of a messy project. The time involved will depend on the amount of grout to be repaired. Rerouting tile is not very complicated to do, some of the materials and equipment you will need are; the grout, a grout sponge, a grout float, grout saw, rags, a solution of 1 to 1 vinegar and water, dry towels and a Grout sealer. You will need to select the right type already installed when repairing. Also, the color will need to be matched.
At the area that needs to be repaired, clean with the vinegar and water solution. Using a grout saw, remove the broken grout being careful not to chip the tile. When the broken grout is removed, dampen the area with plain water making sure no excess water pool in the grove. Mix the grout per instructions then use a grout float to apply the material. Smooth with the rounded dowel. Remove any excess grout off the tile with a grout sponge. Make sure to allow the grout to dry completely per manufacturers instructions. After thoroughly dry apply the Grout sealer by rolling the sealer on with a roller in overlapping sections and your repair is finished.
For larger areas, you may want to contact a Tile and Grout professional in your area. Floor areas can be especially time consuming and difficult. They can give you advice on all repairs needed to bring your grout back to its original look
